Welcome to the beginning of Politeia’s new blog. Here at Politeia we encourage reflection, discussion and debate on those social and economic issues in the UK and the wider world. So let’s take the debate further. We set up in 1995 with the aim of tackling the problems faced by the UK and other western countries; healthcare, pay for pensions, tax, employment, the global market and the big philosophical questions.
How do we do it? We publish pamphlets and books. We hold stimulating conferences – and with the best specialists world wide.
Politeia’s impact is now global. Demand for our pamphlets shows a global influence. Above all, the impact at home and in Westminster is strong.
We hope that here you will join us in bringing the issues to a wider audience.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Welcome to our forum! Here we continue the Debate Should Countries Compete over Tax? hosted by Politeia on June 10th.
As you’ll have seen, Germany made the headlines in February 2008 when it paid for stolen data. This contained the details of bank accounts held by Germans in Liechtenstein.
Many in the UK (which also paid for stolen data), saw the action as a further attempt by the EU and OECD powers to erode independent tax systems and end tax competition.
Competition, however, is central to economic success. Many economists see it as important for efficient tax systems. Without competition, efficiency and accountability suffer.
As labour and capital become more mobile, is competition to be encouraged or ruled out of order?
Politeia’s conference, Should Countries Compete Over Tax Rates? addressed these questions and the panel considered all the angles. We hope you will join this debate.
